Features

Everything a power user needs.
Nothing you don't.

ZipOrZoom is built for engineers, creatives, and IT teams who move a lot of files. It's fast where it should be, cautious where it matters, and quiet the rest of the time.

Batch operations & recipes

Save any workflow as a reusable recipe — format, preset, destination, naming rules, post-actions. Replay against thousands of files in one click.

recipe: nightly-backup7z · ultra · split 1 GB · sha-256 · move to NAS

Watch folders

Drop files into any watched folder and ZipOrZoom handles the rest — compress, rename, notify, move on. Set it and forget it.

Checksums, built in

MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512, xxHash. Verify archive integrity before and after — or stamp a digest into every outgoing file.

Split & join

Break massive archives into neat multi-part volumes for email, cloud, or USB — and rejoin them anywhere, with or without ZipOrZoom installed.

Self-extracting archives

Ship your archive as a single double-clickable executable for macOS, Windows, or Linux. No recipient install required.

Benchmark & estimator

Compare formats on your own files before you commit. See real-world speed, ratio, and CPU cost side-by-side on your hardware.

Archive diff & versioning

See exactly what changed between two archives — added, removed, modified, renamed. Keep a local history so you can roll back an archive without rebuilding it.

Health dashboard

Scan your archive library for corruption, duplicates, password failures, or orphaned split volumes — all in one view.

Duplicate detection

Spot duplicate files across archives before you compress. By name, size, or content hash — your call.

Formats

The ones you use.
Plus the ones you forgot about.

ZipOrZoom reads and writes every major archive and compression format, with smart defaults, full password support, and Unicode-correct filenames across platforms.

  • AES-256 encryption for ZIP and 7z
  • RAR5, including solid and recovery records
  • Ultra, fast, and store-only presets per format
  • Unicode filenames, correct on every OS
  • Pluggable format handlers for power users

FAQ

The practical questions.

Is ZipOrZoom actually free?

Yes. The public beta is free on every platform, with no ads or trackers. A paid Pro tier with team features is planned after 1.0 — but everything currently shipping is free.

Does it replace The Unarchiver, 7-Zip, or WinRAR?

For the overwhelming majority of workflows, yes. ZipOrZoom reads and writes all the major formats those tools handle, plus modern ones like Zstandard. If you have a niche legacy format we don't support yet, let us know.

How does it handle large archives?

Streaming throughout. ZipOrZoom never loads a full archive into memory — it works the same on a 50 MB zip as on a 400 GB multi-volume 7z. Progress is always cancellable.

Does it work offline?

Entirely. All compression, extraction, and checksum work happens on your machine. The only thing that touches the network is the auto-update check, which you can disable.

Is the code open source?

Yes. ZipOrZoom is developed in the open on GitHub. You can read, build, and contribute to both the Swift and Electron codebases.

What about encryption and passwords?

ZIP uses AES-256 by default; 7z uses AES-256 with SHA-256 key derivation. Passwords are never stored unless you explicitly ask ZipOrZoom to remember them in your OS keychain.
